I prefer curtains, but the landlord had already installed blinds when I moved in here, so I didn't see any point to spending money on curtains. What I would do if I had the money would be sheer curtains near the window, with heavy draw drapes over them. Then you can have the light while still filtering the view of your private life from outsiders, or have it dark and warm when you want to.
