Because it's in the media...bad news is what makes news and therefore sells.

For example take two headlines (made up)

"It will be sunny tomorrow and all is well with the world"

It's going to be floods everywhere tomorrow and America is going to bomb Iran so were all going to die!"

Given the choice which story would you read?

Negativity is driven into us by the media for money.

If everything is rosy, then nobody cares and won't watch/read about it. If however, there is a forecast of doom and gloom people want to know.

The thing to do is manage the amount of information you read. It is recommended that people read a newspaper just once (unless for specific non news articles), and watch only a certain amount on the TV a day, no more than say half an hour.

Fear is a form of control. The best way to control people, as a mass or society, is to keep them afraid. It's a simple tactic that works very well. Keep people afraid and they will never rise up and defy you; they will never push for change; they will never try to delve deeper into subjects that may "rock the boat".

It's what the US government, FDA, NRA, UN, and many other groups and sects use to keep people in line.
