I will say Mick Ronson. Those Bowie/Lou Reed and Mott the Hoople albums wouldn't have been half as good without him.

I agree with you about Mick Ronson, and I would also add the Manics' James Dean Bradfield, who is a much better guitarist than most give him credit for. Also Lyndsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac - an amazingly talented guitarist.

The person I think is most underrated/overlooked would have to be Terry Kath. I think Kath gets overlooked because he was in Chicago Transit Authority/Chicago. Listen to old CTA/Chicago the guy was absolutely amazing.
