If you poke a rattlesnake with a stick, the snake does one of two things. It either slithers away to avoid being bothered further or it strikes out at the stick. Striking at the stick doesn't accomplish a thing because the stick is inanimatre and doesn't feel the pain or the effects of the venom. The person wielding the stick is safe and far away, too far away for the snake to strike. Therefore the snake wil make one or two attempts to strike the stick and give up and slither away.
Now people aren't snakes, yet they CAN realize that striking out is NOT going to have any more effect than the snake striking the stick. So the BEST option is to just go awsay and not even waste your time and energy trying to strike out at what is "poking" you to irritate you.

Yeah every morning before I get that first cup of coffee! And I mean real coffee, Community Coffee dark roast, hot and black. None of that whimpy Star Buck's stuff.
