I'm a sophomore in college, and I still have no major. I hinted at being a business (marketing or MIS, possibly) major, but I slowly got turned off from that. I have no idea what I want to do for the rest of my life. I'm interested in a lot of things, but nothing that I could turn into a career. I was wondering if I should take a year or semester off from college, maybe do some traveling, and maybe get to know myself better. Maybe when I come back i'll have some idea of what I want to do with my life. Do you think this sounds like a good idea?

it depends on the type of person you are. some people can take a year off with no problem and go right back renewed and ready to go but all too often people don't go back. that's what i did. and that was 7 years ago. i went to school for two semesters and a quarter and it came to the point where it was time for me to decide on a path, i couldn't just keep taking generic classes and i had no idea what i wanted to do. then i just hated school, it was soooo blaah (even tho i had a 3.8 gpa) so i quit and worked at a job that was fun and totally could have made a career at but i got married and moved and worked as a temp for a while and now i work for a hospital as a helicopter dispatcher. i love my job because it is flexible, i can read books and watch t.v. and movies while at work and i work with great people. it suits me and i am plannin on sticking with it for the duration. tho i am putting money back for retirement because i don't want to work forever. i'll be retiring in 20 years at the age of 46.

good luck!!!!

I think that's a great idea if you don't know what you want tp do. It's an opportunity to find yourself. I'd also advice you to get a job that's marketing or MIS related during that period,it would tell you for certain if that is what you want to do or not and it would also give you some more valuable experience to put on your resume no matter what career path you choose to follow.

As someone who is around the same age as you and has also struggled with finding career direction, here is my advice to you...

TRAVEL! it is the best way to learn about yourself, the world, and other cultures. Why not teach English overseas? There are sooo many jobs out there. Check out www.daveseslcafe.com for more info.

You can take off IF:
-one: if you have not registered! (you can lose your financial aid, if you register and stop going, *only if you take financial aid.)
***LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT RETURNING FOR NOW!
-two: if you have not taken any loans! (They will start charging you interest if you stop going to college.)
