It's not. All that war has done is create terrorists in a country where there weren't any. As soon as we invaded, the terrorists followed. And don't let these answerers use 9/11 because no Iraqi was involved either directly or indirectly in 9/11. Not even one of the 9/11 terrrorists had any connection to Iraq. That war is about oil and money and it insults my intelligence for Bush to push the protection of the USA on me.

If there are greater communist worldwide places then our version of "freedom" will become weaker. Nope! No airplanes piloted by swarthy men who don´t know how to land aircraft have slammed into my house recently. But my sister in law was raped and battered in the supermarket carpark the other day and my neighbour's children don't want school to start because they're too afraid of all the druggies and guns in the halls and classrooms. AT A PRIVATE SCHOOL! God knows what it is like at the public school.
My husband and I are having trouble meeting the mortgage payments on our home in our gated community but it's either live here in relative(EXPENSIVE) safety or worry about my daughter all the time.
Yeah,you know, Gabrielle whatchamacallit up there might have a point.
I really do not worry about airplanes flying off course. I do worry about my home being broken into,my daughter being raped,my husband's being laid off, drunken drivers,and meeting insurance and mortgage payments. On these issues the odds aren't in my favor.
Hijacked airplanes and terrorist bombs? Nope,not likely enough for me to lose any sleep.
At least I don´t live on the San Andreas Fault or have to cross any decrepit bridges to get to work or I would be a candidate for permanent and incurable insomnia.

That's a good question, I've asked myself this more then once and, have discussed it at length, once with my grandson who's been over in Iraq for, his third term now.

I spent two tours in 'Nam, wounded twice, wondered the same thing. I had to tell myself that I am doing a duty toward my country and, following my commander in chiefs orders.

I had a good feeling, thinking I was help the suppression of poor and helpless people in another country, they were people just like me, had no other means of aid. I did see personally what they went through.
The horrors of their brothers killing them, torturing them, men, women and, children, the innocents of war.

I helped carry out the wounded and, maimed children that were locked in a School, the rebels locked them in and torched it, to slow us down in chasing them. They had no qualms about the atrocities they created, it was their "ends to a means" and, I think they enjoyed it.

So, in all, maybe it's not your freedom, maybe it's for others and, you have to concede that to call yourself humane, you have to think about the women and children of the world that can't fight back, they need help. Maybe this justifies it? I just don't know anymore.

IF WE WERE ATTACKED AGAIN, AS THE TERRORISTS SAY THEY ARE GOING TO DO, EVERYTHING COULD SHUT DOWN.
ONE NUKE COULD SHUT DOWN A WHOLE CITY.

We suffered one terrorist attack which killed close to 3000 people and irreparably damaged expensive downtown real estate. The deaths of unarmed civilians was horrific,devastating and INEXCUSABLE!

But! This was not an act of war by a foreign power on the U.S.!! This was -nothing more and nothing less - a terrorist attack,a disgusting CRIMINAL action that had no right to be as successful as it was.

We, on the other hand, have been criminally wrong(and criminally STUPID) by going to war against two countries (Iraq and Afghanistan),neither of which ever declared war on us,attacked us on our soil, or harboured the means to do us harm within our national boundaries(where we belong). We are occupying a foreign nation- and not even competently enough to maintain a minimum of law and order. We are imposing our way of life and our ideas about what is righteous on them.

Meanwhile,we have been criminally negligent in our police work,in our intelligence work. We have not fought terrorism as it needs to be fought ..by patient,diligent police and intelligence work. We spend billions on the FBI and the CIA and our different Police Forces and we do not use them adequately. Osama Bin Laden and his fellow terrorists have not been found. Al Quaeda has not been disbanded.

Our country's hysteria induced reaction has been like going after a very pesky and ornery rattlesnake with an atom bomb. We have blown everything in sight (including about a quarter of a million innocent Iraqui civilians) to smithereens,plunged a country into chaos and lawlessness,opened their borders to hordes of ruthless terrorists who slaughter them everyday BUT we still
haven´t found the rattlesnake who has gone to hole somewhere till the ruckus is over. He's probably chuckling into his turban with glee and thanking Allah for such stupid adversaries.

Our European allies, who have had years of experience with terrorism, offered us their help and experience in battling this scourge. They tried to tell us that going to war was USELESS and expensive and in the long run would only breed more terrorism. Not only didn´t we heed their advice but we disparaged them and demonised them.
Their predictions came true and, sure enough,London and Madrid suffered horrific terrorist actions.

Today there are dozens of Al Quaeda terrorists in French,German,British and Spanish jails. None of the September 11 plotters are in our jails. The perpetrators of the Madrid and London bombings have been brought to justice by their police forces. All we have done is go to war half way around the world against countries that posed no threat to us. Fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan will not preserve a single of our liberties. But it is already breeding a new generation of people who hate us enough to become terrorists.

Our military machine is an enormously expensive resource that is supposed to protect us. We do not maintain it in order to ¨bring democracy to the world¨.
Each society,each culture must win democracy and civil liberties for itself,if indeed it is desired at all, which is highly debatable.

We are squandering billions of our hard earned tax dollars uselessly. The army would do better to come home and police our streets and fight crime where we suffer it the most,here at home! On one Labour Day weekend more people were probably killed on our highways or in our cities than died on Sept 11! The deaths at the WTC were sad and unforgiveable but no more sad than the death of anyone caused by a drunken driver or a pschopath on crack . A child killed in a driveby shooting in Los Angeles is as equally dead as the CEO on the 99th floor of the WTC.

Troops in Iraq are not making our country safe. Troops in Iraq are creating new enemies who hate us and maintaining them there is impoverishing us here at home.

Let´s stop policing the world. Let's stop these inane righteous missions to impose democracy on alien cultures. We are not smart enough to run the whole world.
We get it wrong on almost every count. Let´s get back to doing what we do know how to do..to being a hard-working, industrious, creative nation AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting that you were in Vietnam. Do you know that it was OUR government that screwed the French in the late 50's when they were fighting the Communists? WE,yes,we,the U.S.A. backed and armed Ho Chi Minh who was later to kill all your buddies and those Vietnamese peasants that you were so concerned about.
