I was just thinking about the book when I stumbled on this.In book7,JKRowling says food is one of the exceptions to Gamp's law of elemental transfiguration. If it is so,then how does McGonagall produce those chicken and ham sandwiches and pumpkin juice in Chamber of Secrets?(pg no.65)She used her wand,so it was not elf magic. Please don't tell me she had some food tucked away in her pockets and multiplied it.
PS:Can I get a star?

The summoning charm doesn't make things pop out from nowhere. So,I don't think it was a summoning charm.

So Gamps Law only says that you can't conjure food out of thin air. You CAN tansfigure certain matters into food though. Nowhere did it say how exactly she conjured the food, only that she conjured it. She definatly could have had some matter there ready to transfigure. OR of course... she did have her basket of crackers sitting on her desk. Very possible it was there back in the 2nd book as well. I'm thinking right now of Hermione not being able to make any good food while they were travling in the tent... but well, Hermiones is brains, not a cook. You simply need to master those kinds of transfiguration spells.

In answer to your PS, sure get one.
The food (biscuits and jug of juice) were already in the Great Hall and in the kitchens. She did not conjure it out of nothing. She simply made it appear. It was some sort of summoning charm I guess, only the food apparated instead of hovering from somewhere to the table.

In order to produce the food, Proffessor Mcgonagall had to know where it was located. She cannot conjure something out of thin air. So, she knew where the food was (saw it in her mind's eye, so to speak), and brought it to Harry and Ron.

It is easy to say it was already made and transported there or it was transformed from another matter. In Deathly Hallows, they mentioned that magic can be used to obtain foods in other ways. It just can't be brought out of thin air.

i think of, as a results of fact that is magical and all, Fred's hand could disappear from the clock - having his hand there for all that element after his dying could be irritating, if no longer frightening, for the Weasleys, does not it? as nicely, if each and every lifeless member of the Weasley kinfolk became into nonetheless on the clock, it may be overcrowded with arms. yet, in spite of the fact that, it may desire to have been purely the Weasleys all of us understand. and that i do no longer think of there's a factor categorized 'lifeless', to be elementary - that is in basic terms extraordinary and pointless. For the disappearance of the hand (if it did in certainty disappear), i think of it may in basic terms vanish or rapidly fade away: that's what magic can do, after all.

must have been another spell.... might have been possible to conjure the food out of thin air.... maybe just not transfigure it from one object to another....The same way Mrs Weasley waves her wand and produced a stream of some sauce of some sort (don't remember which book).

If it's an exception to the "law," that changes it right there, and as for McGonagall, to my view she is a most powerful witch who can do practically anything, and does! & here's your star, a gold star for a potter quetion...the unbelievable!See? Anything can happen!
