We used to do it on holidays in Durban, go up to the cane fields and munch on the cane sticks. It tasted great.

I have. Here in Puerto Rico, I lived by the sugar cane fields and everday during the "zafra" or cutting time, I would be by the fields watching and the workers would give me a few fresh cut sticks. They were juicy, sweet, cool to the taste but yet I would have to chew hard. But yeas, I have eaten raw cane and loved it.

a long time ago, i live in louisiana and some of my family owns some sugar cane fields. it's not something i'd probably do these days... i try to limit my sugar intake. it doesn't seem like something that is very good for the teeth... chewing on sugar cane i mean.

Yes, during my childhood, in our province we used to pick from the field and eat it with gusto. Raw sugar cane are cut in pieces - approximately 4 - 6 inches in lenght and are sold in the market.... according to our old, this made their teeth and gum strong.

How i wish that this will be available in our city market today so that kids will experience the joy of eating raw sugar cane.

yup. I grew up on the edge of the everglades in south fla, and there was sugar cane everywhere, we were surrounded on three sides by farmland...we chewed sugarcane, but not often...it WAS a lot like chewing yer cud!l ol
I remember when they would burn the cane, I'd sit on our porch and watch all of nature run through our yard fleeing the fire & smoke.

Yes in florida and georgia it is sold by roadside vendors and in the farmers markets. It is a treat I have shared with my children. I think it is time to find some and teach the grandkids about it. Thanks for the memory. Oh and usually there is somewhere like Stone Mountain in Atlanta that has a site where they are squeezing it for juice and boiling it for syrup.

Yes, I did that as a kid when I was in India and loved it too but cut into little pieces made it easier to suck on. I still really love the freshly made sugarcane juice too.
