My fiance is getting ready to move for a year to Memphis, Tenessee for a job and we've heard nothing but bad things about it! Can anyone tell me--is it really that bad? Crime-wise, etc.? Also, after looking at the stats--the city is mostly black with a lot of white. I've heard people are really racist there--"blacks don't like whites, and whites don't like blacks, and they don't like interracial relationships"
My fiance is biracial--will he have problems? He will probably be moving to the 38115 or 38141 zip codes if that helps.

I'm from Memphis and there is alot of racism there. blacks and whites are like that there. as far as crime goes...well yea that's there too. you will not want to go to south Memphis. pimps and their girls are wide open, you would think it's new york!! north Memphis seems to have alot of shootings. you will want to live in the east. the 38115 area is in east Memphis. that is the Hickory Hill area. it is not bad. they have a nice mall there, alot of places to eat, shop, and a HUGE movie theater was built not long ago. that is a decent area. i don't recommend 38141. that is called whitehaven, not a good area!!! its right up there with the southside. as far as interracial relationships..you see it alot, its not uncommon. your fiance will be fine. you have stupid people wherever you go. they're alot of rednecks there too. Memphis is not all bad. you have alot going on too..Beale st is Rocking!!, Memphis in may is fun. BBQ fest is wonderful, so much FUN!! people come from all over the world to that event. the best BBQ in the world..it's a huge cook-off, music, alot of fun. Peabody place is nice there is all kinds of stuff there. tunica (casinos ) is not too far. not all of us are racists, some Memphians still show that great SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY.

I was in Memphis a couple years ago and it was a neat city, especially Beal Street =)
However, I did notice the racism, and black people seemed more racist against white people than the other way around!

Both of these areas are Hickory Hill which I would steer clear of the (especially on the areas paralelling Winchester in the 38115 zip code) but the southern half of 38141 (the areas south of Shelby Drive) are still a pretty nice area
