Typically, elemental sulfur or sulfide ores are burned in the presence of air to produce sulfur dioxide. This gas is mixed with additional oxygen and passed through a converter where a catalyst (usually vanadium pentoxide) transforms it into sulfur trioxide which is reacted with the requisite amount of water to form sulfuric acid of ~93-98% concentration.
