Granpa always said "it takes 6 live men to carry 1 dead 1, to the grave,at work,or welfare!" Sometimes its needed,(as a bandaid), but too many times its used as a RETIREMENT FUND!! I was a single Dad w/3 kids, out of work,$$$,needed help, got it,had time to find a job,(didn't burn time picking up cans to feed my kids), got off of it!! Glad it was there, I hope&pray never again!!

Why work when you can get the government to pick up the tab? Unfortunately it is a never ending cycle. There is a huge government bureaucracy devoted to keeping the cycle going. Welfare, W.I.C., Food Stamps, Medi-Care, Medi-Cade are just some of the "solutions" this bureaucracy is responsible for. Unfortunately not only does the government waste millions of dollars on these "solutions" but it also has to pay people to work the agencies that make up this part of the bureaucracy. Unfortunately keeping a portion of the population at or below the poverty line also keeps these people working. Why should they help the poor get out of poverty? Where is the job security in that? So yes, to many the government is just one HUGE piggy bank.

I'm a Federalist.
I don't think it's a federal issue, but I have no problem with it being a state activity or a local activity. I would think the best thing is community projects to ensure business activity and cohesion within a community. RFK was a promoter of such programs, and I think it was probably the best liberal thought on helping the poor...unfortunately his party was more apt to throw money at the problem, rather than face it.
RFK died, and his legacy in ways has been foreshadowed (by an inept idealogy of victimology). Perhaps one day we won't see the good ones die, and people will recongnize real help vs pandering.

nicely interior the States it has a foul rap because of the fact like something it gets abused. i become on it even although I worked 2 jobs! Neither of the roles presented insurance and the insurance that my ex presented for my daughter in basic terms covers Dr visits-no dentist or eyes. Plus the nutrition stamps each so often made a distinction in notwithstanding if or not a bill have been given paid that month! on the different hand there are 2 sisters down the line that have 5 teenagers between them and neither certainly one of them have had a job because of the fact the oldest (8yrs!) become born. those are the people who reason something human beings to get lumped jointly! as quickly as this is spring i individually am going to be decrease back working yet via then i'm going to be tickled to get out of the living house for some grown up time! :)

I support them, but they should be better designed to help people become more upwardly mobile. Unfortunately there does appear to be a cycle of poverty and welfare-to-work programs have mixed results. What would be best is to be able to get people from government assistance into the productive middle class.

I am disabled and work and have worked ever since I was able to get a job. So I think if you are at all able to work you should. I have never applied for government assistance. My take on it is get the best education you can so you can get scholarships and grants. Getting the best education you can would the best government assistance you can get if you are going to get it.

My stupid sister has 4 kids and no man she works and gets nothing from the government.
My mother is a widower without any benifits from my father, she is very hadicapped, she works and gets nothing from the government.
I think we should stop ALL welfare and just make people get jobs, however the democrats have determined that forcing someone to work amounts to slave labour so...

My father would have been dead, along with his 13 siblings, if the govt. hadn't feed, clothed, housed and medically treated them.
Most of his siblings went on to be upper middle class, several became millionaires. My dad spent 22 years in the Navy.
The country got it's money back and it's moneys worth. And we were a decent society then.
My take on it - whatsoever you do to the least of these, that you do to me.

My take from being there. Welfare and welfare to work are trying hard to help but there is a hole in the loop from poverty to living wage. It is hard to jump over the space to get to the other side.
