The mold is on the central air vent and on the ceiling above the air conditioner, and I am afraid that prolonged exposure might cause health problems. I need to keep it from spreading, and neutralize it completely without renovation to the room because it is an apartment building. Any legitimate answers would be greatly appreciated, any ridiculous answers just to recieve points on your account will be disregarded and reported. Thank you.

Black mold is dangerous and should be taken very seriously. My BEST advice is to contact a specialist in mold decontamination.

If you choose to 'do it yourself' you can try a concentrated spray of chlorine bleach (50% bleach and 50% water). Unfortunately, this will only kill the visible mold. The hidden stuff will still be present. You can purchase mold 'test kits' from Home Depot or your local health dept. You can use these kits to monitor the effectiveness of your mold treatment.

Best wishes and good luck.

I would check a hardware/home building store to see what is commercially available

but I believe bleach would be affective

we had a single family house had a back bedroom unused with window open just a crack
black mold formed along the wall and hardwood floor under the side of the bed that was against the wall
I put a few cups of bleach in a bucket of warm water and liberally sponged everything down (actually did the whole wall from ceiling to floor and poured it behind the baseboard)
When that dried with the help of a few fans, I put the latex gloves back on and went over it again with pure bleach in all the area that actually had mold

That took care of it for me, which was good because a relative with a child with allergies moved in and so far 20 months no problems
You would have to decide if it might help you and if you can stand breathing bleach for so much of time working with it

where that house is it is illegal to rent if you know of black mold and if you sell and know of black mold you are required to disclose it

I sprayed household bleach and water directly on the mold, and it died. If I had it in the vents, I think I might spray bleach undiluted into the vents, and open the house up completely to air out and help destroy the mold. I think I would work on a delivery system that would spray bleach into the vents, allowing the bleach to saturate the air in each duct. I would also make absolutely certain that there wasn't anyone inside, and I'd turn on the fan to circulate the bleach throughout. I sure hope that helps, and I would give serious thought to contacting someone who is a professional in that area and asking them to come out and give an assessment.
I hope that helps

There is only one thing that kills mold and that is bleach. Use a paint brush or a rag and wipe the area really good with full strenth bleach. Please ventilate the room well. There is also a product sold at most hardward store called mold control which is a very good product but bleach will do the same thing. Please be very careful as you know the fumes are powerful. I guarantee you this will help. If you are prone to mold then do this about once a month as part of your cleaning routine. It does work but again please ventilate well and don't mix bleach with anything else the bleach is enough. Good luck

First clean the area with bleach and water. Make sure you wear a mask. Then paint over the area with a paint like kilz. Then you need to check the ac. Then you need to clean the ac. If it is a window unit, remove it from its case and wash it with a garden hose.
