Does this proverb hurt you feelings? Or do you find it quite wise

It means that those who have no understanding of why one would lie won't lie.

It is wise. It reminds us that although we may be smarter and wiser than children and fools we forget the beauty and simplicity in honesty. Despite all of our knowledge we forget the wisdom in telling the truth.

I find it wise. Children can get away with an embarrassing comment because they are too young to know any better. Someone who hasn't learned this social norm by the time they're older is a fool. We choose to mask or ignore the truth, or at least not admit it out loud because it is inappropriate or irrelevant. It's a learned survival skill because if you told everyone the truth all the time you probably wouldn't have many friends.

I don't see why this statement would hurt anyone's feelings, but I would be interested in where the proverb came from.
I am shocked at the answers already received. There are plenty of kids that lie like crazy! And....no one lies better than a fool.

They don't tell truth thinking it is truth and that they should tell the truth. It's something they do inadvertently and not by any choice. So,it's not a big deal. Why should it hurt anybody? There is no wisdom involved in it either. It's just a plain statement which some people may take to mean what ever comes to their minds.

Wise....children aren't hampered by guidelines and ettiquette, so often say the things we adults are saying without guile. Fools say it like it is because they don't know better than to muck about with people's feelings.

Children DEFINITELY tell the truth - as long as it doesn't get them in trouble. BUT they CAN learn to lie very young! But more often than not, if it is not self-incriminating, they tell the truth . . .

I think most fools lie however . . .

Children, and presumably fools, don't fully understand the consequences of their words and so they allow themselves to say what they are thinking with little or no self-editing. .The rest of us take into consideration the feelings, opinions, and temperments of others before we speak in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.
