Eggs didnot have the shell when it was inside the body of the hen hence shapeless. To lay it the egg has to pass through an elastic tube having a peristalsis wave which propels it out wards. when it meets the anal sphincter more pressure is required to push it out thereafter as the egg passes out and with the contraction of the sphincter the later part of the egg get taperred off gradually thus it becomes oval. As it passes through the elastic tube it acquires its shell and finally becomes hard with the exposure to atmosphere. This explains its oval shape.

Why Are Eggs Oval Shaped

The oval is actually a very strong shape. Try to break an egg with your bare hands from the top to bottom (not touching the sides). It's impossible. This is why subway tunnels are oval shaped. The oval shaped eggs have a stronger chance of surviving in the wild than circle. And I guess a square would hurt the poor chicken too much

This is a case of the egg coming before the word. Oval actaully means egg shaped. Ova means egg.

But seriously, I've seen eggs that are all kinds of variations on oval. It's just the shape that forms when a bird pushes it through it's ovaduct. The shape could be an adaptation that allowed birds to lay eggs on flat surfaces and not have them roll away. Maybe all the birds who had round eggs died out because their eggs all rolled away.
