I am an out of state student w/ a relatively low GPA (like a 3.2 unweighted), but I have very high (90th percentile) SAT and SAT subject test scores. I have had my essay looked over by 3 english teachers at my school, and all of which said it was excellent. I am also involved in an after school club, I have job experience, and hours of volunteer work under my belt. I was just wondering if I have a chance of getting in, even w/ a low GPA? The admissions officers kind of beat around the bush when I ask them about the admissions process and such. Any input is appreciated!!

I forgot to mention that I took two AP classes my Junior Year, and am now taking two more my Senior Year... I'm not sure whether or not that makes a difference, but I thought it was worth mentioning!!

The beating around the bush is because there are no absolute standards; what matters is who else applies. If they have enough applicants with who exceed your qualifications, you won't get in. If yours are among the better qualifications, you will.

Yes, you have a chance. Your essay should give them an idea of why your grades weren't better. You have to convince them that you will succeed in an environment that is much tougher than high school.

Consider applying to Santa Cruz, Riverside or Merced as backups. They are a little easier to get into, and it's easy to transfer later.

It is possible. All the people that I know have had at least a 3.5 gpa though. I would make sure to apply for some of the other UC's as backups.

I say you have a chance of being admitted to UC Santa Barbara. Just keep your grades up in your senior year.
