Your car is designed to run at or around the 200 degree mark depending on make and model. the combustion chamber burns at nearly 2000 degrees and you must have good coolant or risk a meltdown and a siezed motor. you need an coolant flush every 3 years or 30,000 miles. its very important that you don't run just water because the acidity of the antifreeze prevents rust. Also its not good for your car to get hot. in heavy traffic going slow on hot days of course it will get hot but if its any closer than about an 1/8 of the way from overheating your motor is cooking. its fine to get like this but you must replace your oil and coolant much more often because of the harsh driving conditions.

It's good to have your cooling system serviced every two years if you do a lot of driving. Like 10K-15K a year. Despite the claims about coolant not requiring servie until 100K this leaves your system more vulnerable to problems.
Everything deteriorates from the high operating temperatures and the coolant is not immune to this wear and tear.
The least you could do is have them check the coolant concentration to make sure it is in the 50/50 range (50% water/50% coolant).
Thermostats should be replaced every five years as preventive maintenance.
Good Luck!

Normal. The electric cooling fan comes on at a fairly hot temp.

you may need to have the radiator flushed out real good on it,it sounds like the fan is working on it,because if it wast it would go way high, but have a shop check to see if the coolant is flowing real good through the radiator, usually a good cleaning out will fix that problem, but have it checked to be sure, good luck with it.

I would change the thermostat, and check the coolant. If the coolant is brown, I would go have my motor flushed out before I did any thing.
