I run a double spell check sometimes, an instantaneous one.
and the one provided with Yahoo.
As English isn't my first language ( being Dutch ) I was taught
' proper ' English in school. When I ended up on Yahoo Answers
I considered it polite to switch the dictionary to American English as they seem to be in the majority over here.
Unfortunately I have a penchant for quaint and obsolescent words, not to mention a liking for some slangy expressions
that I consider funny.
So apart from the ou's that change to simple o's and a few
other simplifications common to American I sometimes lose
my temper when typing away, because the spell check tells
me I'm wrong when I know I'm absolutely correct.
But the word just isn't in the dictionary, and the 'suggestions'
are sometimes plain idiotic.
It is educational though, so I just grin and bear it.
Hoping the spell check will occasionally surprise me coming
up with a serendipitous suggestion.
It still won't make sense but I will have unexpectedly have stumbled on a new word for me.
So spell check is a foe, but an old respected one I feel comfortable with.

I am a stickler as far as spelling goes, at least for myself. I find it much less important when speaking with friends. All that is necessary for good communication between friends is an understanding of the message that is being conveyed.

I don't hold spelling mishaps against anyone. Much more important is what is being said, aside from spelling and grammar mistakes.

Friend, because it finds things you missed.

Foe, if you have used the wrong word spelled correctly, it won't flag it. Like: We're Were, There, Their, To, Too, Two.

Always print and proofread after spell check.

Both. Technology helps us - eg. cell phone in the car when you have an accident, and isolates us - eg. here we all are talking to each other on YA instead of having real face-to-face conversations and building real relationships. It gives us access to up-to-the-minute global information - eg. the internet, and it ties us to it - eg. total dependency on blackberries, etc. Friend AND Foe.
