This is more of a statement then a question because I didnt get a chance to respond. It seemed like some people may have though the 1983 Nissian 280zx electramotive turbo that had 700hp and a 140mph 1/4 mile time was a factory produced vehical. This is absolutely not the case, this car was a race car that was NEVER offered to the public and was never a factory produced car for the public. Like stated, there is was never a stock factory produced Nissian 280zx turbo that is capable of a 140mph 1/4 mile speed. It would be like when some one asks the question "whats faster, a new ZO6 corvette or a ford edge" and some one answers "the ford edge would because it is a 800hp car" because they included the nascar versions. Now come get your easy two points and an additional 10 for some one.

chevyraceman, I am in 100% agreement with you. Check out this site.

thats where it is talked about as a race car that did well in the 80's. It had to have every thing totally custom. Which was my point to the person trying to use it as a car to comapre agaisnt factory cars. It probally had so many custom parts that it didn't have anything from the factory 280zx in it at all. If you get a chance to check the site out, let me know what you think.

I myself never heard of the 280ZX electramotive turbo.. What year was it built in.. If back in the early 80's, I find it very far fetched and WAY out there.

In the early 80's a 12 second car was a blazing fast drag car.. Now days a 12 second car is just a quick street ride.

140 mph trap speed, would put that 280zx in the mid 9's.. About 9.6 seconds 1/4 mile.. In the early 80's that would have been a record breaker, and that would mean, I would know of it. It would have been one of the fastest cars of that time in pro drag racing.

Now lets look at the power, and how it was got..

Turbocharger... Well early 80's and great turbos don't come to mind.. Those was the days of the martin draw through systems.. No norm racers was using turbos and only 2 guys that I know of was messing with high HP turbos on gas engines then.. That was Gale Banks, and John Lingenfelter.. They had just started modd'ing them.. Joel Rosen of motion performance also used and sold the martin draw through systems.

Ok.. Next lets look at power made from turbo... Turbos back then was making 20-30 HP per psi boost... Sooo figuring in the power the engine made N/A.... Your looking at 20 psi or more boost.

Even today alot of engine combos can not handle 20 psi.. Even race engines.

Most common head gaskets will only handle about 10-12 psi before they blow.. MLS gaskets which is a new thing will handle 20 psi with no prob, but they didnt have MLS gaskets back then.

Best head gasket in the 80's would have been a flat copper gasket and a stainless wire O ring.

Next to handle 20 psi boost.. You need some strong bottom end parts.. Forged rods, better rod bolts, forged crank, forged pistons (low compression pistons to work with that boost)

Main studs, aftermarket main caps., etc etc.

I can't find any of those type race parts in my old catalogs for the 280's straight 6 engine.

Then what about the fuel system to handle that?

Lets not forget gearing, transmissions, rear ends, etc.

I can tell you right now that 280ZX's rear will not handle that kinda power.. Even the 300's R200 rear won't.. I have done V8 swaps into Z cars over the years and found 300 HP with traction to be the breaking point of the R180 rears, and 425-450 HP with traction to be the breaking point for the R200 rear.

So it most have had a ford 9", chevy 12 bolt, or dana rear end under it.. Which kills off the IRS and goes to a fixed live axle.

What tranny was used? I know the 280's transmission couldnt have handled that kind of power

Sounds to me like it could be a crank position sensor. See link for more info:
