"Determine whether or not the given table could possibly be a table of values of a function".. what does this mean?!!!

If two values of y (the supposedly dependent variable) correspond to the same value of x (the supposedly independent variable) then it is not a function of x. If that isn't true, it COULD be a function of x.

If you now mentally switch what you call x and y, and the same thing is true, then it isn't a function of the new x, that is of the old y. If it isn't true, it COULD be a function of the old y.

Note that it's possible for y to be a function of x, but at the same time for x not to be a function of y --- or vice-versa. It's also possible for x and y to be functions of each other. It's ruling out the double-valuedness of one of the variables that's the key to solving this problem. When two or more entries in column P correspond to the same entry in column Q, then the variable correponding to column P can't be a function of the variable corresponding to column Q.

You should have a table with several pairs of entries. They represent coordinates that may be on the curve of a function. If they are, they are a table of values of a function. For example, if the function was y= x^2, a table of values of x followed by x^2 in each pair would be a valid table of values of the function. However, if you had something like 4,14 in the table, it isn't a table of values for the function.

Well you'd have to post the table in order for us to be able to tell you... it depends on what value are in there to see if it could be a function or not.

if the function is given
the value of x and y will be in correspondence to each other

if the table is not a function
then the data might not be in correspondence to each other
you have to result to statistics or method of regression

i am guessing that they have an X and Y on it
it means that you need to show if the table that they give you is right and to see if it is right then just plug in the points to the variables of the function
