$5/$52 = $X/$130
multiply both sides of the equation by $130
$130*$5 / $52 =$X
$130*$5 / $52 = $12.50 tax

first find the tax rate
5/52 = 9.61 %
now apply it to the new item:

tax = rate x price
$5 = rate x $52 ==> therefore, tax = 0.0961 or 9.61%
the sales tax, therefore, on the $130 item is
0.0961 * 130 = $12.50

so the total cost is $57
I = P(1 + r)
57 = 52 = ( 1 + r)
57/52 = 1 + r
r = 57/52 - 1
r = 5/52
so the tax rate is 5/52
130 + 5/52(130)
= $142.5
142.5 - 130 = $12.5

so you need to find what percentage of the $52 is $5
Its always easier to think of an example like this
sales tax = $10
item before tax = $100
percentage increase = 10/100 = 10%
so for your question you do the same thing
Sales tax = $5
Item before tax = $52
percentage increase = 5/52 = 9.6 % (rounded to 1 decimal place)
so then just work out 9.6% of $130
=$12.48
(I don't have my calculator today so please check it on yours)
