I just saw that there is another, about the size of small kittens.I leave a bowl of water outside because it has been so hot this week.I have seen one inside, after our cats food.I thought I could keep them outside with a bowl of leftover food, chicken and grapes.I know, get a screen door...
But,is it bad to feed these little guys?I looked on line and rabies is really not a worry in this area.We live in Vence,CA..lots of squirells and racoons here too.My cat,Sinbad, seems very disinterested in them and they with him. Thanks in advance,G.C.

If their mother is no where around, I would call animal control, they can take them in and get them healthy, then release them back into the wild. I don't think it is a bad thing to feed them, but they are probably not getting all the nutrition they need from human leftovers. Also, if they are just staying in your back yard in plane view, they are probably not aware what to do on their own yet. Maybe they got lost from their mother or maybe their mother died? In order to make sure they are safe, call the local human society or animal control, because they could offer them the best chance at survival. Good luck!!

With feeding any wild animals, the problem is - what happens if you are away????

Wild animals can become dependant on us for food, and sometimes this means they can no longer survive without our help, or may miss some important nutrients.

It is usually ok to leave a little something extra out for them, but not enough that they stop looking for their own food. This way, they can just look for extra if you are away or for some reason unable to keep feeding them.

Wow, that's really sweet of you. I would check with a local vet or with PETA to see what they think. Interesting that those wild critters can survive in such a congested area. Years ago when we lived in Pasadena, skunks used to come out at night and knock over our big trash cans. Needless to say, our two cats stayed in at night. Yes, a screen door might be a good idea!

Opossums might kill other animals for food ( I live in FL and the man behind me had 6 ducks for pets...they killed all the ducks in one week. They were full grown ducks, fenced in.) They climb, the jump, they eat anything...I'd leave the possums alone...Mom might be around and if she's not, it's better they die..( I know it sounds harsh, but you cannot make pets of possums...they are mean, bite, scratch, have fleas and sometimes rabies..)if you want them caught...call animal control and they'll come to your house and trap them and release them elsewhere.

Kill Kill Kill Kill!!!!!!!!
Well I don't know about California but in Michigan their nothing more than large disease carrying rodents. I personally shoot the ones in my yard with a 12ga. shot gun. Sorry to seem mean but when your area is over run with varmints you need a little animal control.
