I want to write short stories and publish a book or two. I have writing experience, written many things and even had some poetry published.
However I feel everything, subject wise, has been done to death.
Please give me your new, different, interesting, thought provoking, completely abstract, off the wall, only in your head idea(s).
Thank you

Continue to write. It may be bad, it may be stupid, it may be irrelevant, but it is YOUR writing.
Develop ideas. Outline ideas. Think about ideas. Write all your ideas down.
Then, one day, that short story/article/poem will burst forth. And it will be unique to YOU. It may have been "done to death" but its still you.
I like to swim, so I write about it. I like to read, so I write about it. I like to mountain bike, so I write about it. What do you like to do? WRITE about it.
Writing is about YOU, not about subject matter. So please give me YOUR new, different, interesting, thought provoking, completely abstract, off the wall, only in your head idea(s).
That's what readers want.

I think you're missing the forest by looking for not even for a tree, but an acorn. Or a single stalk of hay in a gigantic pile of needles.
The great themes are enduring and always of interest because they address the human condition. And they've been done, many, many times before you or I popped up on the planet. And they've been done to death, and yet not, because of the individual author's quality of their craft.
So, something new...clever is clever, but good -- is good.
It's all been said before, but no one has said it your way, with your thoughts, skill and heart. That's where it's going to matter. First Reader to Editor to General Public, good trumps clever.
If clever still sounds better than good, make a broad survey of science fiction and fantasy --but even then Really Cool Stuff is only to help tell a story, a story that happens to characters the readers cares about and can relate to, something that forces that character out of their lives and changes them in ways logical looking back, but not unavoidable looking forward.
That hasn't changed, either.
Best of luck, in whatever you choose.

I've written a first draft of a family children's story. I don't believe I could do justice to the final effort. The story is a slap stick comedy. The plot is one of quest. Sub plots are mystery and love. It is a cute story. The story contains ,adventure, life lesson and sport lessons. I'm looking for a co author. If you are interested contact me a sdm60171@ yahoo. com.

Coming up with an original idea these days requires an unimagineable amount of time and effort.
If anyone has come up with something which is original and exiciting, I'm going to guess the last thing they are going to do is fire it off to someone on the internet.
Come up with your own ideas, stealing ideas or pawning off others as your own is the scourge of artistic creation.

I read non fiction to get ideas for fiction. I have a psychology book that gave me the idea for a story about homeless people, A book on dolphins and whales that got me wondering about why are we naked (did we ever have our lives in the ocean perhaps?) You just have to look around you.

the trick is to put a new spin on something old.
To be honest, any basic idea you can come up with has been done 20 times over. Take something you like and make it different.
