i know a ram chip with ddr2 is vastly faster than one with sdram. but does video card speed make a difference? Im currently saving up for a supercomputer for 3d modeling but in the meanwhile im trying to double the speed of my video card.

Do not confuse system RAM on the motherboard (such as your sdram) with videoram on the graphics card. They perform different functions, thus need not be the same. You can use a graphics card with ddr2 videoram anytime. The card just needs to be compatible with the graphics expansion port of your PC. If your motherboard uses sdram, most likely it has a 4x AGP slot.

A video card manages it's own memory, for instance I have a PC with DDR2 memory, and an nVidia 8800GTS graphics card which uses DDR3, the two have different memory controllers, and so the two are unrelated. The interface that the card uses to connect to your motherboard is the only thing you need to worry about. If your motherboard is very old (if your motherboard only supports SDRAM, that's telling me your machine might be getting on a bit...), you may have to use a PCI or AGP interface, which will limit the performance of your graphics card due to the limited bandwidth available.

The video card has its own processor called a GPU and uses the DDR2 to power it. Has nothing to do with your system memory. Some video cards use DDR4 and no computers use DDR4 ram. You can use a video card with as fast of memory as you want.

As a previous answer said, you need to upgrade your memory. You should install an additional 2 GB (2048 MB) and this should correct your lagging problem. Windows Vista recommends a minimum of 2 GB (2048 MB) of RAM. You have half of the minimum requirements on your current computer.
