Actually, it's not that strange of a thing. (Especially in small towns.)
Think about it:
You get paid, go to the bank and get some cash.
You pay cash for groceries and gasoline within 1 block of your bank.
The grocery store and the gas station make their deposits to the same bank you use.
That money many times becomes some of what the tellers use in the next days.
Someone else cashes a check and buys groceries at the same store you frequently visit.
You go buy groceries the same day......
....and the cashier gives you your change that's money that you had in your hand a day or 2 ago.

If you live in a small town, the chances you'll handle that same money again are better than if you live in a big city. Say you spend money at the local Dairy Queen in a small town. Eventually, Dairy Queen will deposit much of that money at the bank. The bank, in turn, will either use that money locally -- handing it over to other local businesses or to customers who come in to cash checks. Excess cash that the bank doesn't need at the time is sent to another branch of the same bank, usually a larger branch. But, yes, the local branch does redistribute much of that money locally in that way. And the smaller the town, the better your chances of getting your hands on that same cash again. I figure it's a slim chance, still -- but better, maybe, than hitting the lottery. Now if you don't agree with me, that's OK. My wife, a former branch manager, puts ideas like that in my head.

I believe the odds are 100 percent that you will eventually have at least one bill or coin come back to you sooner or later. Shall we all write our names on a bill or mark a coin and see?

There are millions of quarters. There are millions of dollars. The odds of finding the same piece of currency twice is really slim. (Good luck)

my sister used to write her initials on all the notes she got in a certain spot. She got one back. But we lived in a pretty small town then so the money probably didn't go far
