Cairns has a Tropical climate, so great anytime of the year. It's been a long dry season and the coldest (winter) in a long time. October will be getting a little bit hotter with higher humidty, but no where as near as Dec/Jan.

Daily I wear nothing but singlet and shorts, even walking on the beach at night it's warm enough for that.

Typical daytime min/max temperature ranges in Cairns are 23C/31C in mid-Summer and 18C/26C in mid-Winter.

You can check the climatic averages at the Bureau of Meteorology web site at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate
Sydney had the Olympic Games in late September/early October because statistically that is the driest time of the year. It is also pleasantly warm and can get hot. Take a sweater or jacket for evenings, otherwise summer clothes are all you will need. You won't need the sweater in Cairns.
