In a direct democracy issues are brought up to vote directly by the people of a country. They will be required to vote for or against a bill. In a representative democracy, elected members like MPs, MLAs, etc. vote on issues. Direct democracy is usually difficult to execute as the number of people in a country are more. Every time for every issue conducting a voting process will be a big process and it will cost a lot.

In a direct Democracy all qualified voters--usually all Citizens--vote on any and all things; ancient Athens is a good example of this sort of madness. In a Representative Democracy--also know as a Republican Government--all of the qualified voters vote for Representatives that go to committees that function as Governmental authorities and vote matters that are delegated to the Representatives by Constitutions--both written and unwritten.

If you are referring to the U.S., we are a representative republic. Now having said that, In a true democracy, the people vote directly on issues. In a Representative republic, we elect people that best represent our views, who then vote on issues. Democracy is a vile form of government, and was truly the one form of government that our founding fathers feared most among all others. A democracy is rule of man, where as a representative republic is rule of law. The word democracy is not in our Constitution or Declaration of Independence.

We have a representative democracy. We elect officials who our supposed to vote the way we believe. In a direct democracy everybody can vote on anything, it is not possible in the US today.

Direct democracy is when the people gather together to make their own laws. Representative democracy is when they elect people who will make the laws for them.
