Ex. career choice, poor, different race, did time, etc.
Not all of those necessarily but just examples.

My family has NEVER approved of anyone I've dated... but I can't control my heart. I'm going to be attracted to someone regardless or race, religion, stature, etc...
I need to make myself happy... regardless if the family approves or not.

Thankfully that has never really happened with me, however I would be ready and willing to back up my partner against my family. I understand that my family loves me and wants whats best for me...but "their" best for me might just be a horribly wrong person. I'll show them why I love my partner and if they cannot find it in their hearts to at least be civil with him then it's their loss. There's no way that I would stop loving anyone just to please a family member.
