Hands down the Scion. Toyota makes better products. After about a couple of years, Kia's tend to "go down hill".

Well...my first instinct is to say "SCION!"
But on further reflection, I'd say the Kia, which is likely to be...reliable ENOUGH but still likely to break down sooner or later...would impart many more valuable lessons about car repair and maintenance than would a virtually indestructible Toyota like the xD.
But really, a better choice would be a 5-10 year old used car. You're likely to maintain it poorly, and you're more likely than you'll be for DECADES to wreck the thing. Best to not waste so much money insuring it and paying for it.

Scion xd due to it being more reliable than the kia and will most likely spend less time in the dealer for odd noises and quirks.

I would go for the Kia because pf the warranty and it has greatly improved its reliability.

The Kia has a better warranty. It might need it though.

While Korean cars have made great strides in quality and reliability, they probably will never catch up with Toyota products, and probably neither will any other company.
