Harlow is a large town in Essex, most of which was redeveloped in the 1970s. It has several sprawling housing estates, a large Tesco's and a council refuse site. Why anyone would want to inflict its name upon a child is beyond my comprehension - and I'm struggling to find anything remotely "old fashion" [sic] or "hippyish" about it. There can be few places in the UK *less* "hippyish". People who inflict place names on their kids had better damned certain to visit the place concerned prior to the birth. Anyone who has actually been to (m)any of the places used as first names would, after doing so, probably have a very quick change of mind! I've been to Harlow and Preston (which seem to be the commonest; though I have known a couple of kids called Charlton; one after Jack & Bobby, the other because his dad was a Charlton Athletic fan.) Harlow *CARR*, on the other hand, is a very lovely place (it's a Royal Horticultural Society garden near Harrogate, North Yorkshire.) But, if you want places like Harlow, then how about Dagenham, Romford, Epping Forest, Hemel Hempstead, Luton or Slough? That do you...?
