My Mother in law wants to take my daughter into Canada tomorrow. I have been looking on-line and found that she can get into Canada without a passport (she's under 15) if she has a Birth Certificate, photo I.D., and a signed permission letter from her parents. I can't find anything that says what she will need to get back into America after the trip. They are not flying, they are driving over. So can anyone tell me what she needs to cross back into the U.S. after her visit?
My Mother in law is a Canadian Citizen with resident Alien status in the U.S.
My daughter is a U.S. citizen.
I also asked this in Travel, because I need an answer ASAP since my MIL gave me less than 24 hours notice. Thank you so much if you can help.

There is no way to get a passport by tomorrow morning or I wouldn't need to ask this question. Thanks anyway though, I guess you were trying to help.

She doesn't need anything else except the identification you've listed. I can still drive to Mexico and back with just my driver's license. That does change next year, but for now no passport is needed--guaranteed. Obviously you can't get one today anyway--there's a 2 month backlog for a passport.

My 10 year old daughter and my wife traveled to canada and back last month at Niagara Falls. She almost was not admitted back into the US because my daughter did not have her passport with her. The Canadian officials told her it would be OK, but the US customs officials a day later would not let her back into the country without the passport. Get a passport for your daughter, or be prepared for a 5 hour interrogation.

The link below is the US Department of State page on Canada. I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but if it is not on that page, I recommend calling the Department of State and asking. The 'Contact Us' link has a toll free phone number.
