WHAT? HOW CAN THIS BE? I THOUGHT THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SOME KIND OF SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE? I seem to remember liberals using that to prevent an Alabama judge from posting the Ten Commandments outside a court house. But I guess it's o.k. for someone as enlightened as Barrack to tell a minister how to preach. Or maybe he's one of those "do as I say, not as I do" kind of liberals (aren't they all like that).

NO using condoms not only prevents STD it prevent pregnancy.
Promoting just abstinence isn't stopping teens from having sex. There is a city in the state I live that the precentage of teen pregnancy is astronomical. A conservative state. Maybe if these teens knew about condoms there would be less pregnancy.

While it is likely Barack is correct in his assertion, I feel that he is trying to tell religious figures what to preach and how to preach it. Religion does not conform to the reality we create. It does not conform to the common behavior. People who change their beliefs to support their lifestyles are arrogant. Religions of almost any sort encourage us to change our lifestyles to support our beliefs; not the other way around. I agree with Obama, but I fear the precedent he is setting. Also, politicians are not the parents of our children. They should stay out of doing the parent's job for them.

I think he is being realistic! I mean, let's look at things - teens are still getting pregnant, even though the church preaches about abstaining from sex until marriage. I bet that teen pregnancies would drop if churches began handing out condoms.

Let's face it - people are going to do what they want to, no matter how good/bad it is or potentially is. At least give them the tools to have some sort of protection. I mean, telling them not to has not been all that successful. . .

I agree with him. The Bush administration has backed abstinence only education and nothing else, which leads to an increase in teen pregnancies, abortions, and STDs.

You cannot stop people from having sex. If they want to do it, they are going to. And when they do (not IF), they need to be prepared. Parents need to teach their children the dangers of sex, different birth control methods, etc. When you shelter your children from the truth, you are only hurting them. When they decide to have sex, they need to be safe and have available birth control.

P.S. About your snide abortion comment...if more people used condoms (and were taught how to use them correctly) there would be less unwanted pregnancies. Less unwanted pregnancies = less abortions.

It has been proved that teaching abstinence does not prevent the spread of STIs and STDs, unplanned pregnancies, and in fact, abortions. If more people used protection, there would be LESS abortions.

I think that this was a smart and courageous thing for him to talk about, because it shows that he recognizes a problem, and is actively trying to fix it.

remember guys.. condoms cost a lot less than diapers

"Abstinence Only" has not been very successful at preventing unwanted pregnancy or STD's. By teaching people proper methods of birth control, you would have a better chance of reducing abortions.

He would say this to prevent abortions.

Abstinence only education has been shown time and time again to be ineffective. Young people don't listen and if they don't have the appropriate knowledge and access to preventative birth control they simply won't use it.

America has one of the highest rates of unwanted pregnancy in the developed world and this has largely been attributed to its poor efforts in sex education. A comprehensive sex education involving teaching about abstinence, birth control, reproduction, relationships etc. has been shown to be most effective in preventing unplanned pregnancy and STDS.

If he truly said that to a minister, it upsets me. It sounds to me like he is overstepping the bounds and infringing upon the man's rights both of freedom of speech and freedom of religion. If he actually said it, and is thus dictating to a minister what he should preach, then he would be violating the 1st Amendment of the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
