I am good at math and I will not answer the question.
However, I admit that the title was catchy and caused me to look. And for that, I will give you a hint.

a) is easy as it is simply a rewrite of the general statement, with a value for x.
b) took me a few seconds. It is easier if you think of it in terms of g(y), where g is the inverse function to f (what the question calls f^-1) and y is the variable that takes on the value 50.

ff gives me the cost of buying acres
g(y) gives me the number of acres I can buy with...

a) f(50) is the cost (in thousands of dollars) of buying 50 acres of land in a remote area of Vermont.

b) f^-1(50) is the number of acres of land in a remote area of Vermont which can be purchased for 50 thousand dollars.

That wasn't so bad, was it? ☺

This isn't even close to a "real" math problem for anyone that truly understands math. Sorry.
