The way westerners sometimes use astrological signs to show personality type? In the write-ups on Japanese characters in Anime, etc. the blood type is often given, but no explanation as to what it is supposed to "mean"... is there a website somewhere that explains this? Help!

You get asked occasionally, but you get used to it.
Seriously though, just give any blood type and they will be like "yeah I can see its you perfectly"
japanese are pretty suspicious, star signs, palm reading, blood types, customs and traditions.
eg. whistling at night calls robbers, you will notice bowls of salt in shops to ward off bad spirits etc.
Sometimes it can work to your advantage, if the person you like has a 'matching bloodtype' teehee

Wikipedia has an article-

I agree with twikfat-no matter what blood type one confesses to it's invariably considered a perfect match.

i really dont like fortunetelling.
one of my friend (girl) couldnt get job because she doesnt know about blood type fortunetelling. (she worked in a bar.)
when she has nothing to talk with customer, she can talk about fortunetelling. (because all japanese know about this)
its kinda important for them.
