From what I remember from APUSH and that was 4 years ago, mind you, was that the American Revolution was not really a "turning point" for civil rights. In fact only a few short years later the white statesmen/founding fathers agreed on the 3/5 compromise and settled to take up the issue again at a later point in time so as to avoid dealing with it then- because it was so divisive. I do recall something about the first casualty in the Rev. war being a black man though.

it was the cornerstone for the turnaround against the idea of slavery. the independence was a framework for the independence of the slaved indians and blacks, as well as all following societies.
