The best record in the League will play the wild card. The other two division winners will play each other, unless the wild card is in the same division as the best record. The Red Sox cannot play the Yankees in the first round. If thats the case the best record would play the worst record of the other two division winners.

Leagues remain hermetic in the Division and Championship Series.
The three division champions per league are seeded 1, 2, 3 depending on season records; tiebreaker methods exist if necessary. The league wildcard team is seeded 4 regardless of its record.
Division Series pairings are 1-4 and 2-3 unless the wildcard is from the same division as the 1 seed. If this obtains, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4. Higher ranked seed has homefield in Games 1, 2, and 5 (if necessary). Three victories advances.
The League Championship Series is played in a 2-3-2 format, four victories advances. Game 1 homefield again goes to the higher ranked seed. (Note the wildcard never gets homefield.)
The World Series is also played in a 2-3-2 format, four victories claims the championship. Homefield is predetermined by the league which won the summer's All-Star Game.
Then baseball is over and the world is a less bright place for a few months.

the team with the better record gets homefield for game 1,2,6,7
with the matchups is if the team with the best record faces the team in that league (AL,NL) with the worst of the 4 playoff teams which most of the time is the wildcard team unless the wildcard team is in the same devison. then the case would be that the best record would face the 3rd best (second worst)
if the season ended today lets use the AL
AL east Boston (84-55)
AL Cent Cleveland (79-58)
AL west LA (81-56)
AL WC NYY (76-62)
it would be Boston v Cleveland and LA v NYY
if Seattle or detroit win wildcard it would be Boston v sea/det and LA v Cle
