An inner struggle, or inner conflict, is a form of conflict that someone has with himself, rather than with someone else.

For example, an external confict may exist between "a good guy" (like Superman) and "a bad guy" (like Lex Luther).

But an inner conflict is one that exists within oneself - usually a moral dilemma or a struggle with a decision one has to make. For instance, when Peter Parker has to decide if he's going to continue to use his powers to help others or if he's going to give up being Spiderman and just live a normal life, that's an inner conflict.

Inner conflicts usually make for the most interesting stories, because they reflect the human condition so well. Just think about the last time you had a difficult time making a decision, or trying to keep a promise to yourself, and you'll know that it's true!

Good luck with your essay!

An inner struggle is a conflict within a person; a struggle to change oneself, or fight against something within onself.

For instance, a character who's fighting an addiction has an inner struggle. Or, someone trying to overcome his own nature. One of the best examples of an inner struggle in literature is Thomas Convenant in the series by Stephen R. Donaldson. Covenant constantly battles his own nature; he exhibits a great sign of the internal struggle -- he dislikes himself noticeably.

Typically an inner struggle is a necessary element of great literature. When a well-crafted inner struggle exists, the character cannot sove the external conflict completely without resolving his inner struggle first. Consider "The World According to Garp." Garp constantly struggles with his own feelings of inadequacy, and until he becomes comfortable with himself, he can never have a stable relationship with his wife or enjoy the world around him fully.

Inner struggle is the struggle that you have within yourself. Foe example you want to do something that is really bad and you know it but you still want to do it and you struggle. Even if you do it you know it's bad and you were raised to do good things, at least that what your parent told you or you have someone who loves you and doesn't believe you're capable of that and you still did it or you know yourdelf that what you did was bad and have a hard time believing you've actually done it. Now you have a conflict with yourself- you're torn apart-that's what's what inner struggle means- a struggle within yourself.

An inner struggle occurs at times when your conscience wrestles with with your desires. It's a type of mental dilemma, at times. Your better judgment or moral values might guide you in one direction, but your feelings pull you in another.
