The North won the Civil War in 1865 at Appomattox Virginia, when Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his forces to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.
This war was fought to end slavery, which it accomplished, though integrating blacks into society has become a challenge ever since.
Don't feel bad for asking, and ignore the people in here who mock others. They shouldn't get any points for such idiocy.

there have been various dazzling speculative histories based upon this premise. the author MacKinlay Kantor wrote a e book, "If The South Had gained The Civil conflict," which replaced into revealed in 1960. greater at the instant, Harry Turtledove has revealed various sequence of novels, called the The Southern Victory or Timeline-191 sequence, detailing the scuffling with of the two international Wars on the yank continent, particularly than the ecu continent, as a consequence of the South triumphing the Civil conflict. the main tragic consequence of the South triumphing the Civil conflict could have been the prolonging and advantageous extension of chattel slavery. i've got not got a expert historic past in historic past, yet i'm particularly advantageous that slavery could have been prolonged nicely into the previous due nineteenth and probable into the twentieth century. everyone answered the question right, the north did win in 1865. But a couple of things, the north actually did not want to "free the slaves". The war was basically that when a territory was to become a state, the northern senators wanted it to be defined before hand if it was a free state or a slave state. They were willing to have slavery in the south, but demanded an equal balance between slave and free states. The southern senators wanted a state to be admitted into the union and then the state constitution written and decided by the residents if it would be free or slave. The southerners felt that the federal government was trying to prevent them from prospering, and attempted to break away to form a country where a white man can make a good living. One of the important things to notice is, even when Lincoln made is Emancipation proclamation, he free the slaves in the southern sates that he had no control of, the northern slave states (we call them the border states) still were allowed to have slaves. Of course that was because he did not want them to flip to supporting the confederates, but he did not actually free any slaves.

Union armies won the American Civil War. It began on April 12, 1861 at Ft. Sumter in Charleston (SC) harbor, when Confederate batteries fired on the fort. It began, from President Lincoln's point of view, to preserve the Union, 9 states had already left. It changed to a war to end slavery in 1863 (sort of) and 1864 (with the passage of the 13th amendment through Congress). It ended, in the east anyway on April 9, 1865 with General Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to General Grant at Appomattox. There were a few small battles fought in the west, the last in Texas, which the "Secesh" won.

It is generally understood that the Union forces (the North) "won" the Civil War by the surrender of the Confederate forces (the South) on April 9, 1865 by General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate army to General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union army at Appomattox.

The North wanted to free slaves. The South wanted to keep them as slaves. The Civil War pitted the two parts of the country against each other. The North won otherwise you would still have slavery.

Considering that the answer to this question is common knowledge, you are making yourself look like a fool for asking it. If you truly do not know, it's time to head for the library, open an encyclopedia, and then take out some books on the subject. There has been so much material readily available for nearly 150 years that it's a shame you haven't taken advantage of it.

Who won the Civil War? The North.
When? Four years, from April 1861 until April 1865, although, for all intents and purposes, it ended sometime in the last half of 1864.
Where? The Civil War was fought in--no! no! I can't prostitute myself any lower. I think you are ready to handle this one on your own. OK, one hint: It's a country. Good luck.

The Union won. Slavery was one reason for the war, but yes, this was the one that "ended" it.
Here's an Wikipedia article to get you started. I suggest you go to your local public library and find some good beginner books on the Civil War.
