At a average normal restaurant like Friendly's, Applebee's, Denny's, etc. Or a pub?
Do people usually leave something nice? Or should I just go for a different job that I don't have to worry about the tips!

If you're good at what you do, you will make better tips. Make sure your tables have what they need. Smile lots! Check on them more than once, and make sure you keep yourself aware of their drink situation. There is nothing worse than running out of water and having your waitress pull a disappearing act!

I once made $600 one night at a casual dining place, but that wasn't the average. I live in an area where tipping is always 25% and the food and wine are expensive. I actually turned down a job at a fine dining place where the average on a slow night was $300 in tips alone. Why? Because the owner was a sleazeball. I don't mind hard work and serving, but he didn't need to be trying to touch my breasts in THE INTERVIEW.

So, uh, yeah, you can make excellent money if you're dedicated and can put up with a**holes.

The basic rule is to tip 15% of what the bill is, but many don't. Most people just leave 2 dollars or nothing, but there are nice people who actually tip the right amount. In general, being a waitress/waiter is a tough job. Long hours, hard work, low pay.

if waiting tables is really what you wanna do go for a privately owned family restaurant. the place i work at has about 25 tables and at night im the only waitress and can make up to 30 dollars an hour, but thats only on a good day, generally its about 20 an hour but i also just graduated nursing school, so im not going to be a professional waitress.

Go for a job you are not worrying about tips.

If you go for waitressing - go with a fine dining or family owned business. People who go to those places will have a little more respect/class.

You'll definitely bust your butt, so charm your way through the night if you want to make some money!

usually for the most part people will tip correctly./Then you get the ones who have no idea how to tip. They have never been taught or they just refuse to give proper tip.I had brother in law no matter what would leave a 1 dollar tip?I mean come on !!people are taxed on it..whatever you sell for the day thegovt assumes you made 15 percent so they tax you on your sales ...so even if someone leaves you a dollar you pay taxes what they ate.
I live by the beach so people here make a killing waiting tables with people on vacation.

Serving or bartending can be a great job if you're still in college. However, it's hard to live with the hours and the hard work- don't let it become your career. But at a place that does a good amount of business, you can easily make 150-200 a night if you're good and don't mind having a big station to work.

The $$ can be great,
but if you haven't done it before,
I gotta tell you.....
you'll know in a week or two if your cut out for it or not.
Most are NOT.
You need to have a thick skin and some backbone, along with patience, personality, endurance and a great, easy smile, whether you feel like it or not!! All at the same time.
Good luck, no matter what you decide.

I have waited tables for MANY years. Your money depends on the customer and the bussiness. Bad day = bad money or none at all. Good day = good money. There is no telling how much money you can make. The best thing to do is try to cheer up the unhappy ones and keep them that way, do good at your job and try.

Yep. I tip on friendliness, service, removal of empty plates, asking is we need anything else, refills on drinks and most of all a smile. Doesn't matter what you look like, the rest does.
