Why is Oswald Avery's discovery so important?

I mean, how does it make a difference in society? I'm doing an essay on Oswald Avery, and I want your opinions on how you believe how important his discovery is, like, how does it make a difference in society?

Isn't he the guy that claimed to have discovered DNA and that those other guys Watson & Crick stole his idea? I believe that DNA is very important but am not so sure about Avery.

I think he should have just quit with the fame he got from discovering Avery address labels.
