Closed shop is union. Open shop means non-union.. you should read this book The Onyx by jacqueline Briskin. Its a really good fiction. Part of it talks about the unions entering the automotive factories in the early and mid 20th century. Quite interesting reading

Open shop means that the shop does not recognize any unions and there for allows anyone with merit to work.
A closed shop mean that all employees need to be affiliated with the local unions.

"... medical practitioner is not (a) keeping an open shop, or (b) selling across the counter ..." Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 & Rules, 1945 India. How to define this in an Act of the Indian Parliament?
Does that mean that we can keep a "closed shop" and "sell on the same side of a counter"?

Closed shops employ no union members. Union shops employ only union members. Unions prefer union shops because they have a measure of influence over the employers, whereas they have no presence (and no influence) in closed shops.
