they are fastened on a rotating assembly, that passes them under the front of the rear wheels, and then back around back. it rather is a favored "necessity" accessory for emergency automobiles which would be out in all kinds of climate,yet don't have 4wd. Even some massive hearth automobiles have those chains putting down under them.

Helps eliminate static by grounding the vehicle to the ground. Some old timers use to wrap old leather belts around the axle and drape on the ground too.
