My nephew has the same middle name that I would like to use - William - Is it OK to use it too or would it be rude to use the same name? (It's a family name)

That's not a problem! Names are free to go around, and your nephew may even consider it an honor for your little baby to have the name William.

In my family, a couple of my cousins have the same name as my brothers, and it's no problem. Unless you have particularly picky family members, it shouldn't even be thought of as a problem.

Even ask your nephew and see what he thinks.

Good luck!

William is a fairly common name--dating back before the 11th century, at least. It is a family name in my family, too: in my Dad's side of the family, every generation that I can remember has William either as a first name or a middle name. My Dad's name was William Herschel, his Dad was William Orval, his grandfather's name was William White; my brother is William Lloyd, and his son is Jeremy William. I think your nephew would be honored to have someone named for him.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I've also got a middle name that is a family name. My aunt has the middle name Lynn, my mother has the middle name Lynn, and so do I. It's kind of fun to pass down a name like that, and maybe it would bring the boys closer together too. Something for them to share, you know? Plus. it's not like it's a very unusual name that you're "stealing" from him. It's a common name, and a great way to honor someone in the family.

I say go for it! Congratulations too! :)

It is fine to use it--I know of a family where a couple of grandsons have the same middle or first name as grandpa.

Of the two that have the same first name "john," one is called Johnnie and the other is nicknamed Jack.

go for it! especially if it's a family name! if ti were a first name, then maybe it would be a problem, but a middle name? it can be a tribute or a compliment to your nephew, and a name is a name, if it's special to you, you have every right to use it!

I think its a very common name, so that wouldnt be rude. Especially if it's a family name, then why not! I think its a good name, its formal-ish, but still cute yet grown up at the same time.

William is a very common name, so I don't see the problem. If you think the parents would get upset, you can ask them what they think. I'm sure they will be flattered.
