borate (boric acid) is poisonous, 15 to 20 grams will kill a person. The dogs should not have access to it; treat where they can't get to, or use the repetitive detergent

the ant cups that have food poison they take home to the nest may do a good job, but again is not for pet areas

Max Force granules work great! I've had two infestations (one was about 6 years ago, one was this spring) and the stuff works like a charm. Ants bring it back to the nest and the whole colony dies. Ants were completely gone within 2-3 weeks. I bought a kit that also had a gel that is injected into crevices for immediate control.

Try spraying the ants and their trails with a 1 to 1 ratio of liquid dish detergent and water. You'll have to do this daily for a while but if you're consistent then it should work for you. It's harmless to your dog and cats.
Ants breath thru their bodies, as do most insects, and they will suffocate.

simple BORIC ACID powder ( looks like baby powder0 applied to the borders and edges/ under cabinets etc. causes a drying out effect on most pests, and when stepped in it is tracked back to the " nest" and the rest will eventually walk thru it too. As I understand life forms as we know them? no pest can live for long with zero moisture in its body... It only costs a few bucks and can find its way under molding into cracks /crevices and anyplace an ant can walk... works on other multi legged pests too cheers..

As I understand it, carpenter ants have a nest inside the house and somewhere outside the house. I dont believe you can locate it and destroy it on your own. You should call an exterminator.
