I don't think anyone should be allowed to carry handguns. it promotes violence in the extreme. It has not been proven that carrying a handgun can save your life or anyone elses. When you are attacked you don't have enough time to reach in your purse or pocket for the gun, take the safety off and get it in position. New York has it's issues, yes. But the public carrying around handguns is just plain scary. I mean, you are at the grocery store, you come out of the store toward your car and see a guy standing near your car. You panic and grab your gun and fire. You get over there only to discover the person you shot and killed is your oldest son or husband who followed you to the store to help you get everything home ok. Having a gun in your pocket just hits the panic button for most people. They see things that aren't there and something awful happens that ruins their life as well as another's.

Yes,but only if judges are permitted access to mental health records,which they aren't currently under the HIPPA regulations. They can check your police record not are in no position to assess emotional or mental stability. Only the judge can athurize a gun permit and unfortunately as things stand they are flying blind on MH aspects.

What do guns do? Don't they kill people? I mean I know that GUNS don't exactly kill people, but that's not the point. If someone was really really pissed and had a gun, chances are higher they'll kill someone. Look how many deaths are by shootings. Less guns = less deaths. And they can find better ways to defend themselves without going to jail.
