Etching means that you are removing material. Light bulbs are etched, removing some of the glass, leaving it frosted. So I don't know what you mean by protecting your glass block with hydrochloric acid. You can clean your glass block with hydrochloric acid, as it will have no affect on the glass. If you just want to protect them, then separate them with heavy paper or cardboard.

Hydrochloric acid dissolves (etches) concrete but has no effect on glass so you don't need to worry about protecting the glass blocks

If you dont believe that then try for yourself on a small corner of one of the glass blocks, or a piece of scrap/brocken glass, you will see no effect.

Hydroflouric acid dissolves glass and so do strong alkali solutions, if you ever want to etch the glass. (use the alkali soliutions as they are cheaper, more available and while they can cause nasty skin burns, they are not overly toxic)

Whatever etching you do(concrete or glass), use rubber gloves, overalls and eye protection!

A splash of hydrochloric acid in the eyes is not a pleasant experience.

Hydrochloric acid has no effect on glass - put some in a glass bottle if you want reassurance.
