They can die any time but, like humans, most of them probably die at night, if it is from natural causes. This is because their metabolic rate is lower at night, so if they are near death, night time is more likely.

No. I have heard that about rattlesnakes. It no doubt comes from how hard it is to kill them. You can cut of the head and have it bite you much later.
