Constipation is really common throughout pregnancy, unfortunately. Early on, I'm assuming it's hormonal... that was one of my first signs of pregnancy -- long before the morning sickness or anything else! So, mere days, I'd say!

A good, balanced diet will help a lot, along with drinking lots of water each day. Look for fiber-rich foods, including fruits and vegetables and whole grain cereals, breads, tortillas, etc. That will help tremendously. ... And, another benefit of eating these foods is that they all contain vitamins and minerals that keep you strong, help the baby grow, and make your body better able to handle the tough part of labor and birth.

The constipation will ease up a little in your second trimester, but will be back in the third, when the baby gets so big that your intestines are smashed to pancakes... it's no fun, but when you see your baby it will all be worth it.

Good luck!

Oh Definately! When I was 8 weeks pregnant it had actually been 10 days since I had a bowel movement. I had been to the doctor and tried everything he said was safe. It took 3 enimas and milk of magnesia in the ER to finally relieve me!
Be sure to talk to the doc asap if you get constipated to see what you can take, I lost 12 pounds because of that!

I know most people won't go through such an extreme situation with that, but, it's always good to at least call your ob's office and ask if it's been more than a day and your not feeling well because of it. You would never want it to go that far.

I found that this was because of the prenatal vitamins (and the high iron in them). I used pericolace for this. You can use colace instead which doesn't contain a stimulant, only a stool softener. Make sure you use 2-3 pills before labor. The first poo is so horrible and difficult to get out.
