An "open" event is not restricted to professionals or by invitation only. Unseeded and amateurs can apply.

In some sports, open refers to all age, weight, and professional status categories put together. The only exclusion that seems to persist is gender.

In tennis the majors (French, U.S.) used to be only for the amateurs many years ago. In the late 1960s they opened up the U.S. tournament to the professional players so that they could play in the tournament. Up until the 1960s if a player had been an amateur decided to become a professional they couldn't play in the U.S. tournament again.

But thanks to many changes to the game over the years now everyone can play without penalty.
