For me it's easiest to convert it all to percentages.

1/5 = 20%
1/8 = 12.5%

100 - 20 - 12.5 = 67.5%

But... you probably need to state your answer in fractions. In that case, multiply the denominators to get a common denominator.

5 x 8 = 40

But to get them to the same denominator, you have to multiply each numerator by the other fraction's denominator. In other words, how many 40ths equals one fifth? The answer is 8. How many 40ths equals one eighth? The answer is 5.

So 5/40 + 8/40 = 13/40, which is jack and alice's combined ownership. The remaining is frank's.

You need to find the common denominatar which is 40 so.

1/5= 8/40 Jack owns 8/40
Alice owns 1/8= 5/40
8+ 5= 13 40 -13= 27 Frank owns 27/40 which is roughly 7/10s

find a number that the two denominators can both be divided from. (by that i mean the number 40- it can be divided by 5 and 8 and you'll get an answer without a remainder.

Now find what they both need to be multiplied to get to 40.

5*8 and 8*5 both equal 40, obviously.

In jacks case the number was 1/5 and both numbers need to be multiplied by 8 so his share is 8/40. Times alice's by 5. She owns 5/40.

added together 13/40. So franky owns 27/40

You have to get all the bottom numbers the same.
So mulitplying 8 times the numbers would work.
1/5 times 8 would be 8/40
1/8 times 5 would be 5/40
8/40 + 5/40= 13/40
And Frank owns the rest.
40/40 - 13/40 =......

assuming no one is selling off more than 100% of the company, and it's not publicly traded....

find a common denomininator for 5 and 8 (40) and convert 1/5 and 1/8 to 40ths. subtract them both from 1 (that'd be 40/40ths) to see how much is left
