I know that there's a period where you have to sart out as a beat writer and all that but that's my dream job and i'll be living in new york. so if anyone can halp me, thanks =)

It depends, which isn't what you want to hear. I would assume Mike Lupica is the highest-paid sports columnist in New York. He did some job-jumping a while back and certainly boosted his salary well into six figures. Then he's done books and television appearances, so the number goes much higher.

Considering the cost of living, most of the columnists probably are somewhere around 100K, although that depends on experience, paper size, etc.

There is no such thing as the "average salary". America is not a communist country, here we pay according to the journalist's talent .

Average? Eh, around $35K-45K a year. Journalists don't get paid for sh*t.
